Why do we need reputation badges or learning points?

Wedon't need them. They just encourage us to try harder. Some people get very competitive. Others, like me, feel small but noticable inner warmth when reaching some landmark or other. But they are not worth worrying about, if you try to learn, they just come by themselves.
