Which of these four skills,Read,Write,Speak or Listen, do you do better in the language(s) you are learning.

Listening is my best skill. After hearing a word in spanish I can read and speak the word. I always listen to the word first in the flashcards.

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Speaking
  4. Listening

I big problem with speaking is remembering what I know to use for a conversation. The other day I had a conversation with a guy and his son in the checkout lane at a retail store. There was a lot more I could have said if I remembered that I knew it (does that make sense?).

Listening is another thing all together - I get so disappointed in myself for not understanding. During that same conversation, the son could tell I was getting lost and told his dad, "you are going too fast for him".

But... when all was said and done... we conversed successfully. Perfect grammar aside. wink

Reading is the easiest, followed by writing, listening, and speaking. The biggest difference is having time to think--it is also easier for me to remember the meaning of a Spanish word in context than to come up with a word with a given meaning.

I like writing, though I like listening (preferably if there's subtitles jeje). I find speaking hardest because of the thinking time. With writing you can take your time to think of tenses and correct conjugations. I do find listening is possibly the most effective way to practise though.

I think my greatest weakness is writing, the rest is ok but writing is a minefield to me.

No it's not weird, Torielisa, because Spanish is phonetic and Heaven knows English is the least phonetic language!! - territurtle, Dec 26, 2011
Birdland, I agree, because the errors show up so, la, el, lo, a, les,ses, las,..nobody hears all that so very well, not to mention the endings.. - annierats, Dec 26, 2011

Reading and Writing because I am already good at that in my own language. Listening it depends on the speed of the person talking. It doesn't need to be super slow, but clear and enunciated That's why I like listening to news anchors and reporters . The only thing holding back my speaking is a lack of confidence. I feel nervous when I have to speak.

For me it's not speed but the person accent. A good way to improve is this site: http://karenschairer.blogspot.com/ - Tasear, Dec 26, 2011

Brown racer - my speaking skills;

Red racer - my listening skills;

Yellow racer - my writing skills;

The "winner" is definitely "reading" - she's now out of sight - but as you can see to me it all feels like it's happening at a "snail's pace"....

I think speaking is the easiest. If I plough on fast and smile a lot nobody seems to notice that I don't say anything in the subjunctive.

Listening goes well too. Usually, the above applies, I smile and pick out enough to be able to smile and say ' si, si'.

Reading is more dreary but it goes well too because nobody knows I didn't notice the differences between the conditional and the imperfect..

Comes writing: Utter disaster! Whoever reads the messages now has plenty of time to study the errors and shortcomings. Even though I spent 5 times as long in constructing the faulty sentences, as I would have done if it was just for saying something...

Writing is the best. That is why I do the best in math.

Reading is the second best. That is why I am a straight-A student with all the books I have (not to sound like a braggart, because I am a slow learner whenever I start something).

Speaking is my second worst. To some degree, I don't usually remember what I say. But I fare okay to less than average with it.

Listening is the WORST! I could have someone lecture and not remember what we were talking about. :'( T_T That is why whenever I go to the biography channel and want to learn about a famous person, I usually pick up on only the main ideas and find the details hard to consume.

Reading first hands down and as Lorenzo pointed out it gives time to think. Writing is next and if my vocabulary was stronger it might be on the same level but to write you need to know what to say and reading usually comes to me with context. Speaking would be third of course but far behind the first two and unless the person talking is going ultra slow then listening is way down there at the bottom of my abilities.

reading, speaking, writing and listening. For me, listening should not even be on the list. I get really frustrated because I know so much, but I can't understand a thing that is being said by someone else!
