Hello, My name is Wes, I am 18 years old and im from Holanda. A few months ago i posted a question on "Yahoo" to ask if someone would like to learn me spanish with the use of Msn. So this mexican girl added me. And since the first moment we talked we kinda fell in love with each other..:p

well anyway my questions are:

She's learning me Spanish but i noticed some different words, will this have much influence on the way i learn Spanish?

and is it smart to talk Spanish to her and learn it the way she teach it me?

Is Mexican Spanish very different than the Spanish they speak in Spain?

I mean my Spanish is still on a very low level but im training myself every day with her help and ofcourse the lessons on SpanishDict.

Thank you for answering and feliz navidad, have a great and healthy 2012.

Much peace and love from Holanda

I'd like to correct you, if I may: she is teaching you Spanish and you are learning Spanish. She is not learning you Spanish. - trip2themoon, Dec 25, 2011
....Or you could say that she is helping you learn Spanish. That's also fine. - trip2themoon, Dec 25, 2011

Sure, there are differences, but it's hard to describe unless you've actually spoken to both Españoles and Mejicanos. Like Nikki said, whichever Spanish you learn (Méjico and España are not the only two options), people will be able to understand you, it's just that your idioms and slangs will come mostly from one culture as opposed to another (just like American and British English differences).

Either way, it can be useful to learn the way things are said in more than one country, because then you will just be that much more effective in your ability to communicate. For example, I was born and grew up here in California, speaking basically Mexican Spanish with Mexicans. Now that I'm older and have discovered the internet, I have been able to talk to people from all kinds of different countries and have absorbed a lot of what I hear.

When I speak to my Mexican friends they say "hey, stop speaking like a Spanish person!" and when I speak to my Spanish friends they say "oh that's cute, you talk like a Mexican." Know what I mean? It's mostly just personal preference, because you're -choosing- to learn Spanish, you get options.

Anyways, yes.

Ps. Often times people will say that Spanish from Spain is more correct than Spanish from México. Believe me, it -all- depends on the person who is speaking.

Well, this is just my view, but if you want to learn the Spanish that is spoken in Spain, they don't learn Mexican Spanish (or the other way around).

It is like if someone wants to learn to learn American English and they have someone teaching them British English. To me it just doesn't make sense.

But whatever you do choose, you will be understood. =)

By the way, the main differences are the accents and some vocabulary. Mexicans tend to use a lot of slang / colloquial terms in normal, everyday speech, though.
