Encima

on top, above, on top of that

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 24, 2012.

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Estaba seguro de que puse mis llaves encima de la mesa, pero no están allí. Supongo que no puedo ir a trabajar esta semana – ¡qué lástima!

I was sure that I put my keys on the table, but they aren’t there. I guess that I can’t go to work this week – what a shame!

..por encima de las nubes. Y como alternativa puedes utilizar el subjuntivo (esté lloviendo) y omitir "yo". :P - RaulSpaniard, Dec 25, 2011

A mí no me gusta diciembre porque encima de la lluvia hay viento y tenemos el invierno encima de nosotros.

I don't like December because above the rain there is wind and we have the winter on top of us.

Hoy han sido demasiados hilos en el tema de Navidad. He tenido que cerrar cinco hilos en mi intento de permanecer encima de la situación. Parece que tengo que ser el Grinch en este día.

My attempt: Hoy había habido demasiado hilos en la tema de la Navidad. Hube que cerrar cinco en mi intento para permanecer encima de la situación. Me parece que tengo que ser el Grinch en este día.

Today there have been too many threads on the subject of Christmas. I've had to close five in my attempt to stay on top of the situation. It would appear that I have to be the Grinch on this day.

Larry the cat lives at No. 10 Downing Street in London. Here he is on top of the table waiting for the heads of state to arrive.

First try: Larry el gato vive a Numero 10, Calle Downing en Londres. Aqui esta encima de la mesa esperando para los jefes de estados llegar.

Correction: Larry el gato vive en el número 10 de Downing Street en Londres. Aquí está encima de la mesa esperando a que lleguen los jefes de estado.

El hombre: un milímetro por encima del mono cuando no un centímetro por debajo del cerdo. (Pío Baroja) The man, an inch above the monkey but not half an inch below the pig.

Hola Moshja, bienvenido al foro y la Palabra del Día....The only thing I can say about your post is the translation - instead of inch and half inch, it would be better in English to say milllimeter and centimer (1 cm = 10mm, 1 inch = 2 half inch....)... - 001a2987, Dec 25, 2011
But very interesting saying... :) - 001a2987, Dec 25, 2011
Hola, buenas, i agree but a friend send it to me like that so i just posted it without changing anything ... its not my saying after all :) - Moshja1734, Dec 26, 2011
