Is agua a male or female noun? It ends in a so I am assuming female.

You assume right, agua is feminine. BUT you say
el agua, las aguas
Nouns beginning with an accented 'a' sound use el instead of la in the singular:
el hache, las haches
el águila, las águilas
el agua, las aguas

It is female, but do a search for "agua" here:

It is actually feminine, although they use the article "el".
