It happens when somebody makes an edit...

Usually to make a grammatical correction... or, very frequently, to change the category of the post.

Tosh's answer is correct. Once you have reached 2k in reputation points you can edit someone elses post and your avatar will appear on that post alongside the authors. If you want to get rid of the current editors avatar (mine for example) just go in an re-edit by simply opening it up and saving it again. You have the ability now to edit only your own but you're almost there.
