En donde estás vs donde estás

Question

Are they just the same or where would you use one over the other?

¿En donde estás Takeda? ¿En donde estás?

He is running around looking for his friend. Seems like ¿donde estás? would work without the en part.

En donde is not used in Spain, I wonder if it is even correct.

Puede ir precedido de las preposiciones a, de, desde, en, hacia, hasta, para y por, con las que se indican distintas relaciones de lugar (destino, origen, situación, dirección, tránsito): ... «No vas a poder cazar en donde ya sabes»

It appears it is correct under certain circumstances and this is what we can read in the "bible":

Para indicar estado o situación (‘lugar en donde’), es opcional el uso de la preposición en ante el relativo donde, aunque, cuando no hay antecedente, suele ser más frecuente la ausencia de preposición: Ponlo donde quieras / Ponlo en donde quieras; La habitación en donde duermo es pequeña / La habitación donde duermo es pequeña.

It may even be regional in Spain, we speak perfect Spanish here in Madrid, like everybody knows

Entonces, de acuerdo con lo que dice el Diccionario Panhispánico de Dudas de la RAE (citas de Heidita), el uso en la oración de Jeezle sería correcto, porque indica una relación de lugar: "¿en qué lugar estás?" - "¿En dónde estás?" - Gekkosan, Dec 20, 2011

I'm not very sure of this, but I remember my teacher ever mentioning that if a sentence has 'en' in it, you use 'hay' instead of 'está'.

For example En la casa hay una cama

But La cama está al lado de la pared

So I think your question would be ¿Donde estás? without the 'en'.

To me, it's incorrect and it sounds even funny... it sounds like a 4 years old' sentence: very naive, and pretty redundant (both en and dónde express location)

Donde can be preceeded by "en", but not in these circumstances, in my opinion.

If not incorrect, it does sound really clumsy.

Mathslover is right. The only time you would use en with donde is comfirming something in the form of a question, ie: "Jeezzle está en la carcel." I don´t believe what I have just heard, so I say "¿En dónde?" (Also if I haven´t heard the sentence completely, I would respond this way)

Both are correct, or so I take it.

What I think on how we use it depends of context.

¿Dónde estás? is used more often, but say you are mad or you are really curious or some situation like that, we use then ¿En dónde estás?
