El ladrón

thief, robber, burglar

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 17, 2012.

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Una vez, vi a un hombre que había entrado en mi coche. Estaba seguro de que era un ladrón, así que grité “Hey.” En ese momento, me di cuenta de que no era mi coche. Por supuesto, me sentí muy estúpido.

Once, I saw a man enter my car. I was sure that he was a thief, so I shouted “Hey.” At that moment, I realized that it wasn’t my car. Of course, I felt very stupid.

Algunos ladrones no entran en la carcel, sino que van a Congreso.

Some thieves do not go to jail; they go to Congress.

Cuando el ladrón tomó mi bolsa yo grité "¡Espera!", pero el ladrón no esperó. Tal vez lo dije incorrecto.

When the robber took my purse I shouted "Stop!", but the thief did not stop. Perhaps I said it wrong.

Aunque sabia que habia cometido el delito, el ladrón no admitiría nada su culpa a la policía.

With drvicente's corrections:

Aunque sabia que habia cometido el delito, el ladrón no admitiría nunca su culpa a la policía.

Even though I knew he had committed the crime, the thief would not admit his guilt to the police.

Cuando era estaba en el golfo Pérsico persiano en 1991, un ladrón robó mi coche y lo abandonó; cuando regresé a San Diego, la policía no me lo devolvería a menos que pagara las multas de estacionamiento (que el ladrón había causado) y la comisión del depósito municipal los gastos de embargo. Tuve que comprar un nuevo coche nuevo.

First sentence looks good... the second sentence should be "es ladrón de chicas" Also Ray, "colegio" is a false cognate it does not mean "college" It more like "private high school" - drvicente, Dec 18, 2011
Thanks Chris . - ray76, Dec 18, 2011
Thank you drvicente , I have changed the second sentence , but on the first , let us say they were in a private school because " escuela secundaria " is a bit unwieldy. - ray76, Dec 18, 2011
Tha's fine Ray..that was just a bit of information no need to rework the whole sentence...good job! - drvicente, Dec 19, 2011
