I believe " gorro is to cap " just as " sombrero is to hat" .Just a specific word that intends one thing ,yet is used often for the other. Buena suertte.

I agree. Sombrero can be used both specifically, (e.g. fedora) or generally (headwear). - 0074b507, Dec 16, 2011

You can also take a look at this:

http://myspanishnotes.blogspot.com/2010/04/hay-mas-cachuchas-de-rosa.html?m=1

It also discusses the word cachuchas which you may hear from time to time.

According to the rae, a gorra is a hat, especially one with a peak, and a sombrero is a hat with a brim or a decorative hat for a woman.

Sure, from "sombra" meaning shade. - pesta, Dec 16, 2011
That's obvious to all, being less pedantic and more logical we understand a sombrero is designed to protect people from the sun, that is its function - lagartijaverde, Dec 16, 2011

You can't get pictures of sombrero without getting pictures of Mexican sombreros which is rather misleading. - 0074b507, Dec 16, 2011
My understanding was that brimmed hats were sombreros and gorra are brimless, but I think there there is a great deal of overlap. - 0074b507, Dec 16, 2011

This is pure guesswork on my part but I think what distinguishes a sombrero from a gorro is that a sombrero has a brim hence the "sun" reference. A beret for example "gorro" wouldn't qualify for sun protection grin

so a ball cap is a hat, not a cap [e.g. bathing/swim cap]? - 0074b507, Dec 16, 2011
Sombrero doesn't reference 'sun' - Sombra is shade. - pesta, Dec 16, 2011
It certainly references "sun" in the sense that the "sombra" part is protection from the sun I'm referencing "sun" via logic as opposed to literal translation - lagartijaverde, Dec 16, 2011
