"Bueno" is an adjective, and "bien" is an adverb.

So you would use "bueno" (buen/buena/buenos/buenas) to modify a noun.

Example: buen trabajo (good work) buena muchacha (good girl)

You would use "bien" to modify a verb.

Example: bien dicho (well said) bien escrito (well written) Ella canta muy bien. (She sings very well.)

¡Buena suerte! Good luck! (No "bien" suerte, eh?)

"Bueno" is an adjective, and "bien" is an adverb. - Usually, but not always! - Jeremias, Dec 15, 2011

The whole answer would probably fill a slender volume, but let's give it a shot.

Very simply put, "bueno/buena" translates as "good," while "bien" translates as "well." Bueno/buena is mostly used as an adjective to define a noun. Bien is often used as an adverb:

  • You are a good cook. Eres un buen cocinero.
  • How are you? Very well, thanks. ¿Cómo estás? Muy bien, gracias.
  • Well done! ¡Bien hecho!

So, the adjective vs. adverb is a good rule of thumb.

But, as you've probably noticed, it's not all that simple. When used as a noun, bien means "good" as in "good & evil." It can also stand for "property" or "goods." When used as an adverb, bueno/buena means "enough." But bien can also roughly translate as "enough," as in ¡Ya está bien! Enough already! In some countries, people answer the phone by saying ¡Bueno! or ¡Buena! Many common phrases using bueno/buena or bien do make sense when you think about it, others just have to be memorized.

If these simple definitions aren't enough to cover your needs, type "bueno" and "bien" into this site's dictionary and read down the extensive list of examples for each. Write down the phrases you are interested in and memorize them. Get a sense of the different uses for each word. Check the Phrasebook and search Answers. If you have a specific question that isn't covered already on this site, come back and ask! ¡Buena suerte! Good luck!

Bien can be an adverb meaning well, very, OK, etc.

Me cayó bien.

Llegaron bien temprano.

It can also be an adjective meaning respectable (or rich).

Es una persona bien.

Bueno is only an adjective - meaning good, kind, nice, etc.

Que tengas un buen día.
