Soportar

to stand, to endure, to bear

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 13, 2012.

This word is a false amigo – be careful!! It does NOT mean support!!

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Debería haber estudiado más cuando era joven, pero no podía soportar estudiar. Es extraño porque ahora me gusta estudiar.

I should have studied more when I was Young, but I couldn’t stand to study. It’s strange because I like to study now.

La mamá afectuosa soporta todo de su cachorros y juega con ellos cariñosamente.

The tender mother bears everything from her cubs and plays with them good-naturedly.

mother / 'her' cubs - also because tender can mean how the mother feels as well as how she acts je je I'd be inclined to use 'loving' or 'long suffering' or some other description there, although tender is not incorrect ;) - Kiwi-Girl, Dec 15, 2011
- well done Porcu ;) - Kiwi-Girl, Dec 15, 2011

Es muy dificil soportar el conocimiento que mi ingreso no pueda mantener el estilo de vida que merezco.

It's hard to bear the knowledge that my income can't support the lifestyle I deserve.

No quiero comer sólo algún pastelito, sino algunos. Por lo tanto, antes de decidir de cuantos necesitas comprar, por favor recuerdas que estoy glotón y no soporto dejar algo sin comer. ¡Me comeré todo!

With drvicente's corrections:

No quiero comer sólo UN panecillo, sino unos (algunos). Por lo tanto antes de decidir de cuantos necesitas comprar, por favor recuerda (acuérdate) que soy glotón y no puedo sorportar dejar nada sin comerlo. Me comeré todo

I don't just want to eat one bun, I want a few (of them). Therefore, before deciding how many you need to buy, please remember, I am greedy and can't bear to leave anything. I will eat (up) everything!

(I am using buns here as a countable noun. I'm not sure whether its algún or un - or probably something completely different hehe - but I will soon find out) grin

"eat up" = scoff Annie :) - ian-hill, Dec 15, 2011
:) lol Ian. Actually I'm just curious to see whether me comere works here with food in general and including the word todo. - billygoat, Dec 15, 2011
ian, pleas let us have 'scoff' for Xmas, I always scoff a lot of ham... - annierats, Dec 15, 2011
A question: what's the difference between eat and eat up? Can I use both of them here? - ianta, Dec 15, 2011
Eat up means to finish eating everything in front of you. In this instance both work fine. - annierats, Dec 15, 2011
Thank you Annie! - ianta, Dec 15, 2011

You can keep "recuerdas" in your sentence if you would like it still works as an declarative/affirmative OR you can use the command form (which I substituted.) I'm not picky...I believe in free choice! - drvicente, Dec 15, 2011
Billy...I have a question what compelled you to use "comerse"?...great choice! - drvicente, Dec 15, 2011
thank you so much drvicente. I am trying to improve my understanding of pronominal verbs and know that in some cases we can use a reflexive pronoun with comer to indicate 'eat up' rather than just eat. When I wrote the sentence it just felt right lol, - billygoat, Dec 15, 2011
so I thought I would include it for your consideration. Also I considered using recuerda (ie informal imperative tense) but because I had inlcuded 'por favor' thought id keep it in the normal present indicative. Muchas gracias mi amigo. - billygoat, Dec 15, 2011
De nada...Excellent...and your intuitions are paying off immensely! - drvicente, Dec 15, 2011

Nature is wise. If you endure, you get stronger. The stronger the wind, the stronger the trees.

I think if I have to put up with preparing for Christmas much longer, I will go crazy.
