adulterated either means that they used inferior products to make it or that they added something to it that they should not have. Beverage alcohol is a type of ethanol (ethyl) alcohol.
This is from a similar event in Ecuador.
The incident first occurred on July 14 in the coastal town of Urdaneta in Los Rios province, where eight were initially reported dead after drinking alcohol contaminated with methanol while celebrating traditional holidays.
Methanol is the type of (methyl) alcohol that you might burn in an alcohol lamp and is poisonous.
