I continually hear the phrase " que bola hacer" or "que hay bola"; Please forgive the spelling. I know that this is slang similar to "What's up?" in English, but I am curios to know where this comes from.

¿Qué bola asere?

As you surmized, it means What's up, dude? Asere has African/Cuban roots. The 'qué bola' part is the same as, ¿Qué onda? Bola comes from balls, but it's abstracted in meaning.

Qué bola

you want a tilde on your bolá! - unMica, Dec 14, 2011
Porque? Bola = ball. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. - Jeremias, Dec 14, 2011
it needs the tilde to be pronounced correctly. some even spell it volá, which is more realistic based on pronunciation, actually - unMica, Dec 14, 2011
es decir, it's more realistic for me. some people actually pronounce their b's correctly :P - unMica, Dec 14, 2011
