Please explain. I was told different reasons. Some people say use su is when you are saying his or her like: I am his waiter. Soy su mesero. Some people say use su when your referring to an object and use tu for people. Soy tu mesero y tengo su cuenta.

Use “tu” when you are speaking to a friend or a child or anyone you don’t want to show respect. Us su to show respect. For people you don’t know well. For people older than you. If you call someone Mr. You would always use “su”. Don’t use Su when talking to your friends or your children . And don’t use tu. Talking to your parents, your boss, or people you don't know

"Su" is used when you are talking to some one who is older or has some authority over you. It is more respectful. (Parents, uncles, aunts, the pastor at church, the priest, your boss, the woman, man you want to impress.

  • "Tu" When you have already established a relationship with someone and you are at the same level.
  • If I am your waiter, I would never say "Soy tu mesero" That is rude, you do not know that person and clearly is not your friend. I'll say, "Soy su mesero y aquí esta su cuenta" But I can say, Soy tu marido, soy tu esposo, soy tu hijo, tu hija, soy tu abuelo. Here is the tricky part. It is ok to say. "Soy tu abuelo" but it is not quite ok to say, "Soy tu nieto" Because of level of respect, I would say. "Soy su nieto" The first one is not incorrect, but it is putting yourself at the same level of respect with your grandpa, mother, father, etc.
