When you are speaking informally like to your friends and siblings but you use the formal "usted" when speaking to someone like your grandmother where respect is given.

And only use "tú" if you're addressing one person. If you're addressing more than one person, you will use vosotros or Uds. :-) - tejanajo, Dec 12, 2011
