Triste

sad, gloomy, dreary, dull

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 11, 2012.

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Me pongo triste cuando pienso sobre todas las cosas que he aprendido durante mi vida, y que he olvidado.

I get sad when I think about all the things that I have learned during my life, and have forgotten.

Es muy triste ser una "reina" y que todo el mundo se ría de mí.

It is very sad to be a queen and have everybody make fun of you.

Querida Reina, no puedo soportar que se sienta triste. Es solamente las reinas más populares que aparecen en chistes. Para animarse le envio esta reina inglesa. ..

Dear Queen, I can't bear that you feel sad. It is only very popular Queens that appear in jokes. To help you cheer up I send you this English Queen.

Por qué estoy triste cuando tu no eres aquí,

Quiero a ver tu cara en las calles

donde caminamos y amado en la lluvia.

Es por que estoy triste que tu no está aquí.

            ---------

Corrected sentences below.

Por qué estoy triste cuando no estás aquí,

Quiero ver tu cara por las calles

donde caminamos y amamos en la lluvia,

Así es porque estoy triste que no estés aquí.

           ---

Why am I sad when you are not here,

I want to see your face on the streets

where we walked and loved in the rain.

That is why I am sad that your not here.

Thank you mate , but is it correct ? - ray76, Dec 12, 2011
First line - 'eres' - I would use 'está' as in line 4. Lines 1 and 4, I would remove 'tu'. Line 4, 'por qué' (tilde). - pesta, Dec 12, 2011
And line 3, you meant 'amamos'. - pesta, Dec 12, 2011
I'll go out on a limb - line 4, subjunctive. '...no esté aquí.' - pesta, Dec 12, 2011
Very nice poem, Ray..lets do it line by line and if you have questions just let me know! - drvicente, Dec 12, 2011
1.por qué estoy triste porque no estás aquí 2.quiero ver tu cara por las calles 3.donde caminamos y amamos en la lluvia. 4. así es porque estoy triste que no estés aquí. - drvicente, Dec 12, 2011
@pesta, good job, especially with the subjunctive tense! - drvicente, Dec 12, 2011
Thank you so much pesta , this is my first attempt at a poem doing it from Spanish to English , very difficult. - ray76, Dec 12, 2011
Thanks drvicente, I shall go with your suggestions and slowly work out where and why I went wrong. - ray76, Dec 12, 2011
Thanks to all, I am reasonably happy with that attempt , the subjunctive in line 4 was a bit sneaky , it was not very obvious . - ray76, Dec 12, 2011
Hey, Ray, did I forget to mention, Great job - I loved the poetry despite all the nasty comments above ;) - pesta, Dec 12, 2011

If things are unreachable, it is not a reason to don't not want them. How sad the paths would be if there was were not the magical presence of the stars!.

Si las cosas son inalcanzables, no hay una razón para no quererlas. ¡Qué triste serían los caminos si no hubiera la mágica presencia de las estrellas!.
