Thanks, the main reason I posted this question was to figure out which word meant captain as in a team, not as in the military.

If you are talking about an indeterminable time in the past:

Él era el* capitán del equipo.

But perhaps yesterday, or last week:

Ayer, él fue el* capitán del equipo.

La semana pasada, él fue el* capitán del equipo.
