why accent mark on single syllable words

I always thought accent marks were to let us know which syllable to emphasize, so why are they needed on single syllable words? one example that comes to mind is sé.

se or sé

tu or tú

mi or mí

se is used to make the passive voice - sé = I know

si = if but sí = yes

Spanish speakers will know some more examples.
