Creo que (yo) vaya / Creo ir

Question

Hola amigos! Quiero preguntaros una cosa. Cual de los dos es correcto:

ºCreo que (yo) vaya
ºCreo ir

Creo ir and creo que vaya

are incorrect.

Creo is purely declarative. Indicative is used to express what you think so using subjuntive after "I think" is a terrible contradiction. You need indicative:

Creo que voy (present)

Creo que iré (future)

No creo que yo vaya. (in order to use the subjunctive this particular phrase, it has to be in negative form)

(No) creo poder ir (This one can be used in a positive or negative form)

Same thing with the following:

No estoy seguro deque (yo) pueda hacerlo

(No) estoy seguro de poder a hacerlo

(No) estoy seguro de poder a hacerlo - Isn't leaving out the que (as in de que) an example of queismo? - Jeremias, Dec 9, 2011

To my undestanding the subjunctive is only used in dependent clauses when there is a change of subject - separated by que, otherwise the infinitive is used. But as Cogu pointed out this is only if the dependent clause requires the subjunctive - with creo que it doesn't - it does however with 'no creo que' ...

No creo ir. I don't believe I'm going/I'll go.

No creo que vaya. I don't believe s/he/it will go/is going.

Having said that I'm not sure but you may well hear the other construction used colloquially.
