Add the Spanish keyboard layout.

try typing this into your terminal:

setxkbmap -option grp:ctrl_shift_toggle us,es

You could also try right clicking on your panel and adding the keyboard switcher icon. Then when you right click on the icon you should have the option to add more layouts in the settings. This depends on which type of Ubuntu you're using.

It worked for me, if it doesn't work for you go to the ubuntu forums.

Rabbit, I'm happy to tell you you've passed all the immigration controls and are now a proper popper member of the very Elite! - annierats, Dec 8, 2011
ha ha Annie! it's only fresh in my mind because i had to do it myself a few days ago on a version of Ubuntu where it's not included by default - rabbitwho, Dec 8, 2011
I'm incredibly impressed, rabbit. I think my computer is dying from stress even without ubuntu. - annierats, Dec 8, 2011
Heh, it would be under a lot less stress with ubuntu! It's a replacement for Microsoft Windows and it makes computers happy, but it's very difficult to get used to when you first start using it. Just like swapping from Windows to Mac, confusing! - rabbitwho, Dec 9, 2011

If you can't for some reason do that, (like me) maybe you can just copy and paste codes....Read Himself's answer here:

Accents and tildes

Wait. Let's back up a few steps for those of us unfamiliar with Ubuntu. You don't have an Ubuntu computer. Ubuntu is just the operating system loaded on it correct, like Windows, Linux, etc.?

Why not improve your knowledge of Spanish and solve your problem at the same time. Download a Spanish version of Ubuntu. Surely with the Spanish version of the OS you can make Spanish characters. And now you can learn all of the commands and help systems in Spanish. (or dual boot with both a Spanish and English version). You will probably have to learn to use a Spanish layout of your keyboard with the Spanish version.

Then again, you had better be the only user of your computer.grin (think of the security benefits)

There are two ways.

  • Go to Control panel and set your keyboard to be able to switch between the two languages. You can also select what two keys you need to press to switch (Ctrl+Shift or Alt + Shift)
  • The other is by holding down the Alt key with your left hand and typing the codes in the numeric keypad. (á = 160, Á = 0193, é = 130, É = 0201, í = 161, Í = 0205, ó = 162, Ó = 0211, ú = 163, Ú = 0218, ü = 129, ñ = 164, Ñ = 0209, ¿ = 168, ¡ = 173.)

I admire you for trying. My husband installed something called a'language bar'in my ancient computer and it a can write in many languages now. ( If I can..) It needs constant alterations and is not particularily compatible with Mozarella Firefox, but, with patience, it all works and I'm grateful as I can't stand copy and paste. Swedish has 3 more letters than Englishs.. I'm glad to have my bar, but it takes a little while to know that Swedish å lives under Enlish P, and ñ needs to press Alt Gr for N. Thisis probably no help, but, if I can, so can you! cheese

If you can install Firefox you can try installing an add on called Barra de español.

It is a handy toolbar that allows you to easily insert special characters and has some cool shortcuts to Spanish news and videos.

Buena suerte y bienvenido al foro.
