need to know how to say an idiomatic-ish expression

I'm trying to say "...without the shadow of a man looming over them" or "without having to stand in the shadow of a man" but I don't know if I've translated it right -it sounds awkward to me. What I came up with is this: "...sin la sombra de un hombre cierne sobre ellas."

Please help!

What about -

Sin tener que estar a la sombra de nadie.

Without having to be in anybody's shadow.

or you could change 'nadie' to 'ningun hombre' if you specifically wanted that.
