Best way to learn a language?
Hi I just have a broad question to ask. I'm trying to learn Spanish...it seems like the best way to learn Spanish would be to go to a spanish speaking country for a while and only speak Spanish so it gets embedded into your brain! LOL... My question is how have you learned Spanish? Were you able to go to school or learn from books here in the US or is it best to learn in a Spanish speaking country? I was thinking of going to a spanish country for a month and going to a Learn Spanish school...

I've been learning Spanish for about 1 1/2 years. Desire, coupled with persistence is helping me to continue in my quest. And notice it is a quest. For me I'm not able to learn this language in a few months because I do not have easy access to a native speaker. Here on the forum are native speakers who correct our mistakes. This is invaluable. Also, this website has fun while learning. I think it helps a lot to lighten the stress of learning and life. There are also posts to help when we get discouraged and this too, is helpful for those times we feel we reach a point of saturation, that we can't stuff any more into our brains. I hope this helps you to continue on your investigations into Spanish.
Immersion, immersion, immersion! Go to a Spanish speaking country and don't expect them to just start speaking in English for you. Remember, new born kids aren't born fluent in any language, they just listen and learn by doing it. Good places to learn Spanish? Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia. Those are my top places for good Spanish speaking countries. Just remember that in any country are cities or States that have strong accents. Avoid those places!
Go to Mexico and get arrested, you will have to learn spanish real fast.
Immersion is great but in the mean time try "Destinos" at www.learner.org Take a look and see if it will help you. It is a series of videos that may be a bit trite for advanced learners but you may find the course useful, I know I do.
