I have a presentation I am doing as part of my final in spanish class. Please look over my paragraph and correct any mistakes. Also, please check for flow and consistency. Thank you!!

I doubt that people can speak en different countries???

(personal "a" if viewed as d.o.)

I doubt that they can speak to people in different countries.

(prepositon "a" if viewed as i.o. ...intransitive, verb of communication,...hablar con)

(theoretical, unreal if clause) unless you are saying "When I get the money to go to Perú, I will go."

(not sure if a de is needed after opportunity)

???? is this a command? (the pronoun is attached)...it is not the gerundio nor an infinitive

I was trying to say "Nobody know where they came from" would it be "nadie le saben de donde"? I'm just not sure. Thanks! - rachelsieg, Dec 6, 2011

Jeremias do you really think that the de is necessary before ir in ''y si yo obtuviera la oportunidad de ir a Perú, iría''? and if so please can you tell me why ?

The grammatical explanation would be that "oportunidad" is a noun and "ir a Peru" is a noun phrase. By adding the "de", you turn the noun phrase into a prepositional phrase (which can function as an adjective) and it's an adjectival phrase that you want in order to modify the noun.

You can think of "ir" as functioning like "going" in English. If I had the opportunity of going to Peru, I would go.

Jeremias, thank you for your prompt and clear explanation. I appreciate that we would say: If I had the opportunity of going to Peru I would go'' but this does not automatiically signify to me that the Spanish natives would also use such a construction - FELIZ77, Dec 6, 2011
Feliz, if you google it you will see other examples. However, as you know, I could well be wrong, in which case I have learned something and thank you. - Jeremias, Dec 6, 2011
Here is a quote from a book I'm reading - "Señorita Tita, quisiera aprovechar la oportunidad de poder hablarle a solas para decirle que estoy profundamente enamorado de usted." - Jeremias, Dec 6, 2011

These comments might be helpful, just recognize that I'm not a native speaker, take these comments and do a little more work on your own. Suerte.

Luego, irían (trabajar and ir should be in the same tense, be it future or conditional) a Cuzco para vender las (sus?) cosas a las turistas. Si haya ahorrado el dinero, iría a la selva de Perú (It's not clear who is the subject of the previous sentence; suddenly you seem to have switched from they to you/formal, or "I" - it's unclear, as you use I later).

I was confident in my response about using 'de' in the above situation because I have seen it and use it countless times, but didn't really want to shoot my mouth off before speaking with one of my hispanic friends. I had my class in Spanish film yesterday and asked my teacher, who is Venezuelan and grew up in Spain. She confirmed this. Also, you need look no further than the dictionary; this from wordreference:

Opportunity to + INF/OF -ING oportunidad de + inf ;

That's saying just what I was saying: Oportunidad + de + inf (Spanish) = Opportunity of + gerund (English).

Jeremias:

from this article:

The present subjunctive is NOT used after si (“if”)!

Si hubiera ahorrado...habría ido (if contrary-to-fact...he has not saved the money)

Si ahorra ...irá or va (real...possible outcome) if/when he saves the money, he will or he is....

However, where the context is unclear or ambiguouos and has not already indicated to whom the action refers I would use them . It was not necessary to use ''yo'' in sentence: ''montaba mi bicicleta'' because no new subject (ie; person) had previously been mentioned which could have caused confusion and the writer/narrator specified mi bicicleta.

Thanks. You cleared up an ambiguous subject pronoun for me in your interpretation. - 0074b507, Dec 6, 2011
That is good Q :) I tend to see them as unnecesay most of them time which is Heidi's good influence on my Spanish. - FELIZ77, Dec 6, 2011
