Hi. I have been learning Spanish for a little more than five years. I must tell you, there is no short cuts. But it is worth the effort to learn it. - DoctorJR181, Dec 5, 2011
I have been learning Spanish for 8-10 years now but with gaps in my learning, that is: I have been studying it then putting it aside for some time then taking it up again ! Without these gaps It would have probably taken me around 5 years too :) - FELIZ77, Dec 5, 2011

  • Try to make some friends who are native Spanish speakers. (You can also find a language exchange buddy online. Check out lenguajero.com)

  • Watch your favorite movies or series with Spanish audio and subtitles.

  • Get some books (in Spanish) to read. If you don't like books I'm sure you can find something that interests you online.

  • Try to think in Spanish as much as you can. Even talking to yourself (as stupid as it may sound) can help a lot.

  • Study, study, study!

Sorry, Anything of value takes time to accomplish; and learning Spanish well will take some time. There are no real short cuts.

Vale la pena aprender el espanol.

I agree with Doctor that there are no short cuts to learning a language really well but living in the country where your chosen language is spoken, interacting with and learning from the native speakers around you will help you a great deal! Their help will be invaluable in making good progress! You could even take an intensive immersion course in Spanish at one of the approved language schools in the area and combine this with practising speaking the language with native speakers as much as possible

It comes down to Practice, Practice Practice!!! wink smile grin

But what's the hurry? Why must you become fluent in only 1 year? ohh confused rolleyes

I have just realised that you have double posted this question Please only ask each question once and then wait for answers :) - FELIZ77, Dec 5, 2011

If you want 100%, I figure you can try grabbing the fattest dictionary, and the fattest grammar book, and maybe the complete boxed set of Rosetta Stone for good measure and, alternating between the three of them, hit yourself upside the head really hard for at least 5 hours daily, until you either absorb the contents by sheer force of will, or pass out - in which case it won't matter anymore, right?

I mean, I have been speaking and reading and writing Spanish most of my not-quite-so-short life now, and I wouldn't dare say I'm even close to "100%", whatever that means....

Seriouly Gekko, If you dare not say you are even close to 100% as a native I would not like to think where that leaves those of us who are not native or fluent yet lol - FELIZ77, Dec 5, 2011
The thing is, Feliz, what does "100%" mean? Does it mean you know all the vocabulary and all grammar rules? Does it mean that you know all the slang, all the ancient terms, as well as Standard Spanish perfectly backward and forward? - Gekkosan, Dec 6, 2011

I have been doing a little each day, memorising words and finding grammar exercises and slowly building my vocabulary. I've been doing it bout 11 months now and I'm happy with my progress so far. Once you've got the grammar, it's much easy to learn words and conjugate them etc.

Use of Spanish media, such as films and music, helps (so I've heard for music, I've only used films). Wanting to learn is the most important part, don't be dissatisfied if you think you're making slow progress.

You won't be 100 per cent in a year but you might be 70 % if you find yourself a spanish friend wink Works wonders

Move to a small town where nobody speaks anything but Spanish. You will have no choice but to learn.

That happened to me when I came to the US from Argentina. My younger kid was 6 years old and probably knew 20 English words. He was doing pretty good in school in less than 60 days. Very traumatic for him though.

You will have NO choice ...etc...:) - FELIZ77, Dec 5, 2011
And "my" kid... plus he "performed" pretty good (optionally)... I would love to travel to the land named for the poetic Spanish "argento'' someday! :) - cristalino, Dec 5, 2011
