What is the rule concerning this? I get the general idea, but I mess up sometime & don't really understand why.

You do have a habit of posing awkward questions. The reason I say this is because I didn't even think about it till now. All of a sudden I have doubts. Does the following help.

VEZ
Occasion - Aquella vez - That Time
Frequency - Dos veces - Twice
Turn - A su vez - in turn

TIEMPO
Duration of time - No tengo tiempo - I haven't got time
Moment - Al mismo tiempo - At the same time
Period - En mis tiempos - In my day
Age - Qué tiempo tiene el niño - How old is the child
Sport - Primer tiempo - First half
Music - Tiempo - Tempo
Weather - Hace buen tiempo - The weather is good
Mechanics - Motor de dos tiempos - Two stroke engine.

Hope this helps

"You do have a habit of posing awkward questions." She certainly ads interest to this site. She is intelligent, AND writes English in English (just like you).

I understand the concept of instance vs. duration.

An "instance" would be like saying I can lift the weight 10 times. Or... remember that time when we got into trouble... Or this time will be different...

And duration actually refers to time itself. like holding your breath for two minutes (of time).

But there seems like many nebulous situations...

"Timing is everything" "It is time to go" "I want to spend more time with you" Or even as the Rolling Stones put it "I've got time on my side"

and probably many others... we seem to be talking about minutes and hours sort of but I just do not know.

me confusa....

I know what you mean Eddy. I go along thinking I know something, then something comes up & I realize I don't really understand it. You know something when you are studying the book, reading or listening but when you speak & you have to make choices, that's when the problem arises. I get it right when we have our little tests in class but don't recall any lesson that contains it..

And yes that does help, thanks.

Just to add my two centavos...

Think of them as having the following meanings, rather than as both meaning time.

vez = instance
tiempo = duration

I love simplified explanations. Cherry has one for ser & estar in lessons. estar = condition, location & as a helping verb, ser = everthing else.
There is an audio somewhere that I heard once and haven't been able to find since on por y para. Very simple explanation, in fact, so simple that I can't remember it. If anyone knows where this might be please let us know.
