Los usa vs Los ee.uu ?
Okay, I have a simple question today... ![]()
I have seen people use "Los USA" (even here in Mexico)... I am wondering if this is correct or just colloquial. I was taught to use "Los EE.UU", so I am just curious.
Thank you!

Unfortunately after a google search of "los usa" I am beginning to wonder if it is actually considered correct. Before the google search this is the response I wrote, which you can now take as an opinion, just not a necessarily correct one : P
Los USA is spanglish, so no, it's not correct. But hey, if that's what people say these days, use it with the people who use it! Just remember that it's not "correct" and I wouldn't use it with people you don't know : )
By the way did you know that the United States (of America) borrowed their name from an older country? In an encyclopedia I learned that the full name of Mexico is: Los Estados Unidos de México.
I think that your history might be a bit off here.
From what I understand, Mexico formally adopted the name Estados Unidos Mexicanos in 1824 with the unveiling of their first constitution. Prior to that, documents such as the Acta de Independencia de Imperio Mexicano, signed in 1821 (and analogous to the U.S. Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, signed in 1776), referred to the nascent country as La Nación Mexicana.
Furthermore, prior to the ratification of the constitution, the document which declared the founding of the new nation (Jan 1824), El Acta Constitutiva de la Federación Mexicana made no reference to the name Estados Unidos Mexicano. From what I understand on the subject, the so-called "American Revolution" was itself, in fact, a major influence in regards to the subsequent series of revolutions that occurred across the greater American continent during the 19th century.
Hi:
If you're writing in English, put everything you can in English. So use the USA but if you are writing in Spanish then put all you can in Spanish... los EE.UU.
Other Spanish countries: el Canadá, el Japón, Inglaterra, etc.
By the way did you know that the United States (of America) borrowed their name from an older country? In an encyclopedia I learned that the full name of Mexico is: Los Estados Unidos de México. In the beginning, Mexico was much larger. That explains why so many cities of the USA have a Spanish name: Los Ángeles (the Angels), San Francisco (St Francis), Nevada (caída de nieve), Florida, (flowered) etc.

Ahhh! si, some people say "la iuma" or "la iunai"...well, at least it's the pronunciation. ![]()
I am pretty sure that I have heard that used in Tex-Mex, but I don't know about how acceptable it might sound anywhere else.
