How do you say "spring cleaning" meaning a very big house cleaning, not just the weekly effort. This includes throwing out old things like toys, furniture and books.

Yes, I would say that spring cleaning is a cultural ritual which would have no direct meaning or translation into Spanish, so it would have to be described to be understood.
