This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Señor, iba a abordar el avión pero me he dado cuenta de que tengo miedo de volar….

Sir, I was going to board the plane, but I just realized that I am afraid to fly…

autobús lleva acento...por poco se me olvidó. - drvicente, Nov 29, 2011
Muchas gracias Vicente! - 00b6f46c, Nov 29, 2011
Vicente, just a question, if something has just happened and you use por poco I was thinking that you use the present tense instead of the preterite - eg por poco se me olvido - is that right? just wondering - Kiwi-Girl, Nov 29, 2011
The translation is "I almost forgot" it is third person singular, preterite not first person, present. - drvicente, Nov 29, 2011
@ Kiwi, the form that I'm using is common when the speaker does not want to assume responsibility for his actions..jeje. The subject becomes the object pronoun and the word that is the direct object becomes the subject. - drvicente, Nov 29, 2011
Ejemplo: Perdí los guantes vs. se me perdieron los guantes. (I lost the gloves) one is str8 translation the other is author does not assume responsibility. I hope this helps! - drvicente, Nov 29, 2011
Thanx Vicente, yes I'm familiar with that 'se me' construction, I was just wondering about the por poco followed by the preterite and was wondering that if it refers to something in the very recent past whether you can just use the present. - Kiwi-Girl, Nov 29, 2011
- thanx heaps for taking the time to answer and leave examples, much appreciate :) - Kiwi-Girl, Nov 29, 2011

Quizás algún día, los pasajeros normales aborden corrientes puedan abordar una nave espacial para viajar a otros planetas, pero dudo que eso suceda durante mi vida, a pesar de los sueños de los escritores de ciencia ficción del siglo pasado.

Perhaps someday, ordinary passengers will be able to board a spaceship to travel to other planets, but I doubt that that will happen in my lifetime, despite the dreams of science fiction writers of the last century.

En el idioma español está permitido que un hombre "aborde" a una chica para cortejarla. Pero no estoy seguro si ese verbo "abordar" se pueda usar con ese mismo significado en ingles.

alt text

In spanish language is enabled that "a man boards a girl to flirting her". But I am not sure if the verb "to board" can be used with the same meaning in english language.
