Bride is novia? Doesn't that create some confusion?

I'm watching Luis Buñuel's "El Angel Exterminador" (Exterminating Angel) and they keep referring to the "Novia virgen". Sure enough, looking it up, novia means bride and novios means bride and groom. Now THAT seems like it could get confusing.

She's my bride but SHE's my girlfriend. See what I mean? I guess you would say "Es mi novia, y ella es mi sancha". Still, is this the best word for bride? Gracias.

Novia is most certainly bride in Spanish.

I know you are waiting for another member to answer, jeje, but yes, it is .

Actually, the dress is called:

vestido de novia

I've heard it used for bride and even fiance.... I'm sure it makes it harder to get a Spanish guy to bring himself to call you his "novia" !

I know, first you've got "novia" then you've got "esposa" and that means handcuffs! - jeezzle, Nov 28, 2011

I've never actually heard it used for bride. More often I've heard esposa or mujer. But, which word is used most commonly probably depends on your region and dialect.

It's possible this movie is using complicated or odd language, since it's a bigtime classic film about "surrealism". - jeezzle, Nov 28, 2011
