The author of: "El Burro de Belen", Hugo Blanco played a small guitar in Venezuela called a "Cuatro". So, in the song it sound reasonable to translate the line: "Con mi cuatrico voy cantando" as: "With my little guitar I go singing". - scott345, Dec 8, 2016

Cuatro Venezolano It has 4 strings, hence the name "cuatro":

Cuatro Puertoriqueño It has 10 strings. Beats me why it's called "cuatro". grin

The current cuatro (four) has ten strings in five courses, tuned, in fourths (Hence, its name), from low to high B3 B2?E4 E3?A3 A3?D4 D4?G4 G4 (note that the bottom two pairs are in octaves, while the top three pairs are tuned in unison).
