Your explanation about "El jefe está canijo" is wrong; we can use "está", and it is correct. It could mean unless in three ideas: 1) The boss is really strict, 2) The boss is some cruel, 3) The boss has a bad temper. I suggest you correct your dictionary translation and explanation.
