"Es a las...." means __________ is at...(whatever time)-- Example: La fiesta es a las 9:00. The party is at 9:00.

"Son las..." means "It is (whatever time)-- Example: Son las 9:00. It's nine o'clock.

¿Qué hora es? What time is it? Es la una...... It's one o'clock. vs. ¿A qué hora es la lección? What time is the lesson? Es a la una.... It's at one o'clock.

I need to answer this question in my homework.

Pregunta: ¿Tienes hora? Contesta: Sí, ______________________________________.

In the blank, I put "tengo hora a las ocho de la noche", and the teacher correct my 'a' to 'son'.

My question is, what exactly does ¿Tienes hora? mean?

I thought ¿Tienes hora? meant Do you have time? (i.e. are you free?) so my response is "Yes, I am free at 8pm."

But the teacher's interpretation seems to beDo you have the time? (i.e. do you know what time it is?) and hence the response "Yes, it is 8pm."

a las... "at" a certain time.

La película empieza a las nueve. The movie starts at 9:00.

son las... "it is" a certain time.

¿Qué hora es? Son las nueve y media. What time is it? It is 9:30.

(I guess you missed the movie). wink
