¿Qué tal? - How informal?

Hi there! I watch the news in Spanish (Noticiero Univision), and at the beginning of each broadcast the anchor will say, "Hola, ¿qué tal?". I understand "¿Qué tal?" to mean "What's up?", and so it's very weird to me to hear it in a news broadcast! In English "What's up?" is so colloquial, and you'd never hear it in something that professional. So, my question is if this phrase is not as informal in Spanish as it is in English? Or if it is just as informal, but the culture is different and it's not taboo to hear it on the news?

¡Hola! Veo las noticias en español (Noticiero Univision), y al principio de cada programa, el presentador dirá, "Hola, ¿qué tal?". Comprendo la frase "¿Qué tal?" significar "What's up?" en inglés, ¡así que es muy raro para mí oírla en las noticias! En inglés, "What's up?" es tan coloquial, y nunca se la oye en algo tan profesional. Entonces, ¿mi pregunta es si esta frase no sea tan informal en español como sea en inglés? ¿O si sea informal pero la cultura sea diferente y no sea tabú oírla en las noticias?

In spanish "¿qué tal?" is not at all informal, it means "how've you been?"

Now, if you wanted to say "what's up?" you'd say "¿qué onda?"
