"Social network"; masculine or feminine?
If I were to write a sentence which had the noun as "social networks" or "redes sociales", would I treat it as masculine or feminine?
1 Answer
I don't see the confusion. This is not an English compound noun where we put two nouns together which might confuse the gender. Social network is an adjective (social) modifying a noun (network). The noun (network/red) would have gender. The adjective just shows concordance. Network (red) is a feminine noun.... las redes sociales.
Now if it had been a compound noun societynetwork, it might cause some confusion, because in Spanish compound nouns are a mixture of verb and noun (lavaplatos, sacapuntas), while in English they are a mixture of two nouns (skyscraper, screwdriver). Coumpound nouns in Spanish are masculine in gender.
