What is the difference between "un" and "uno"?

I am now confused about the use of "un" as the indefinite article singular masculine as opposed to "uno". When are they used, are they interchangeable?

(Un)or (una -for female or words that end in A) refers to a, or an-.un lapiz-a pencil, una casa- a house, whereas (uno) refers to one- yo quiero uno- I want one, -Es uno de ellos, - It's one of those confused confused confused

There are no "female" words (although there are "feminine" words and words that end in 'a' are not always feminine. - samdie, Nov 16, 2011

un libro (a book) .................. una libra ( a pound)

un hombre (a man) ................... una hembra (a female)

un carro (a car) ..................... una mujer (a woman)

un diccionario (a dicctionary) .................... una página (a page)

un hombro (a shoulder) ................... una actividad (an activity)

tienes uno que me prestes? tienes un lápiz que me prestes?
