can you use sin embargo in the middle of a sentence?
Is it possible to use "sin embargo" (or "no obstante") in the middle of a sentence? Or is this just for beginning a sentence.

You can use it in the middle of a sentence, much as you would use however. If it separates two independent phrases, it might have a semicolon in front and a comma after, which gets us back to your original question. It can be used in the middle of a sentence, but is more likely to lead.
Quería ir a la tienda, sin embargo ya ha cerrado y no puedo.
