Los primeros niños que vieron el promontorio oscuro y sigiloso que se acercaba por el mar, se hicieron la ilusión de que era un barco enemigo. Después vieron que no llevaba banderas ni arboladura, y pensaron que fuera una ballena. Pero cuando quedó varado en la playa le quitaron los matorrales de sargazos, los filamentos de medusas y los restos de cardúmenes y naufragios que llevaba encima, y sólo entonces descubrieron que era un ahogado.

I'm surprised that your teacher expects you to spot the subjunctive in a passage without first teaching it to you? The subjunctive is an advanced topic that really can't be explained here in just one answer but in the first example that I have highlighted for you the subjunctive mood is used instead of the indicative because rather than indicate that in reality it was a whale the children just 'thought that it was' or 'that it might be'.
