There are just a few simple rules for syllable emphasis in Spanish.
- If the word ends in -n, -s or a vowel, then the emphasis is on the second-to-last syllable.
- If the word ends in any other letter, then the emphasis is on the last syllable.
- If there is an accent mark over any of the vowels (so that's á é í ó ú, not ü or ñ) then that's the syllable to be stressed.
So, in the examples you gave: caSAdo.....caraCOles.
