There are just a few simple rules for syllable emphasis in Spanish.

  1. If the word ends in -n, -s or a vowel, then the emphasis is on the second-to-last syllable.
  2. If the word ends in any other letter, then the emphasis is on the last syllable.
  3. If there is an accent mark over any of the vowels (so that's á é í ó ú, not ü or ñ) then that's the syllable to be stressed.

So, in the examples you gave: caSAdo.....caraCOles.
