What is alumni?

I have seen the word "alumni" in my university web site, but this word is not in my dictionary. What is it?

An alumnus (plural alumni), according to the American Heritage Dictionary, is "a graduate of a school, college, or university.

Alumni are people who attended a particular university. Many universities have alumni organisations which enable their past students to keep in touch with what the organisation is doing and sometimes to get involved, either through fund raising to help poorer students, or by helping students in practical ways, for example by giving advice on career paths.
