Asking 'how much'

I am reading a few different Spanish learning books at the moment and I noticed that asking 'how much' in Spanish can be said in different ways, with seemingly different replies given.
Are there occasions when one particular usage is preferred, or are all of the below interchangeable?
Cuánto es? Son veinte euros
Cuánto cuesta? Esta está a trienta y tres euros
A cómo está este jamon? A veintecuatro euros

The common question is "¿Cuánto cuesta?" but they're totally interchangeable.

I also hear "¿Cuánto vale?" everyday.
