I don't know, olyjenny. I'm thinking "para". The combo "por qué" is more like "why" and I can't see that making much sense (i.e., why is the hammer??) - and I say this respectfully. "Para qué" is more like "for what", or when paired with "quién", "for who". So, "for what is the hammer?"/"what is the hammer for?"; one could reply, "in order so that I can fix this pipe", or, "para que pueda arreglar este tubo". I hope this helps.

I think you would answer it "Por". I would use Para if the next word was "Quien".
