Very Sad!! Goodbye my friends.

Very Sad!! Goodbye my friends.

The recent events just turns my stomach. Now I have no one to correct my "English Word of The Day"...and subsequently, have to close my thread.

You have no idea how hard it has been for me to make sure that you all had the thread every day. I would worry about it every day. In between the operating room, on business trips, vacation, etc. I did it because I loved it and have become attached to all of you.

Now because of a few, SD will no longer have my thread. I have no one to correct it.

I am very angry that Cogumela and Heidita were treated without respect. I love them both.

So now I will say Goodbye to all my close friends at SD. It was wonderful while it lasted. I will miss you so very much. .....Marshal (Michael

What about the thought of different correctors for different days- with volunteers being able to take whatever days they are available? - Stadt, Nov 7, 2011

Personally I think the demand that you have an "officially approved" corrector is an error.

If everyone accepts that some answers may be incorrect if a native speaker has not "OK'd" them then I see no problem.

We should all strive to write correct Spanish and / or English but this is a learning site.

I never did see a "I have officially OK'd this post" anyway.

So if we lose an official corrector (temporarily, I hope), can this thread continue in some manner?

The way I understood this web site, every thread is potentially useful for learning. They fall into one of the following types.

1. Moderated daily threads - if you post, you are guaranteed to get corrected by a native speaker in the target language. You should only post if you agree that corrections will be offered, and agree that you will accept them. These ought to be conditions more emphatically expressed in the thread rules.

2. Unmoderated learning threads - if you post, you may get corrected, or you may get overlooked, or your answer may not require correction. You won't positively know which outcome you arrived at unless you get positive feedback.

3. Moderated game threads - follow the rules, or you have no business being there. You're likely to learn if you do your homework and use your initiative.

4. Everything else - only forum rules apply, and you may still learn from these threads.

So maybe the English Word Of The Day moves from #1 to #2 until a moderator is available?

Edit: - I should have mentioned that corrections are (or should be) encouraged and permitted in every thread (except the International Café), and may be endlessly discussed and disputed in any thread except those with a designated corrector.

Sounds reasonable to me pesta. - ian-hill, Nov 7, 2011
If I can add, that I am glad for corrections anywhere, including the International Café, celebration threads, and comments. If I write in Spanish anywhere, I will be nothing other than pleased with corrections. :-) - Stadt, Nov 7, 2011
So am I. I have no idea how the site works, whatever has gone wrong? - annierats, Nov 7, 2011
People are arguing with the correctors over the corrections. To me, if it doesn't sound right to a native speaker, it isn't right, no matter what it says in a textbook. - Stadt, Nov 7, 2011
And the correctors that are not native speakers are sufficiently advanced than I that I wouldn't argue with them either- but this was arguing with a native speaker. - Stadt, Nov 7, 2011
But Pesta's point is the valid one. If you are not going to accept the input of the designated corrector, don't post to their thread. - Stadt, Nov 7, 2011

I was told I had to close my thread because I have no one to correct it now.

It is out of my hands. I have no control over this!!!!!

I will continue if I have a person to dedicate their time to do the corrections.

I would love to continue.......Do you now understand?

Marshall, thank you for all your contributions here. You are a good friend on this forum. I know we will see you again on this forum. I don't know what happened, but I regret it for your sake and the sake of Heidita and Cogumela. You are all some of my favorite members on the site.

I regret I have not been able to participate in your threads all the time. My schedule has been unpredictable. But you have been a helpful asset here and I appreciate your contributions.

This is just a temporary set back. Take a breath and relax. You are a good friend to this site.

Marshall - my sympathy goes out to you.

Personally I think the demand that you have an "officially approved" corrector is an error.

We should all strive to write correct Spanish and / or English but this is a learning site.

I never did see a "I have officially OK'd this post" comment anyway.

Marshall as far as I am concerned your thread would be better if ALL those taking part assumed a "collective" responsibility for checking the answers.

You did a brilliant job mate.

I could volunteer but couldn't "guarantee" that my Spanish is at native level.

No one wants to see you go, and your thread is highly valued. I feel saddened by the fact that, as a group, we haven't made our appreciation known to the people that go out of their way to help us.

I am hoping that someone steps in to save the day. It's hard to ask someone to voluntarily take on a thankless job. Maybe this event will show us all how important it is to treat those who are willing with more respect and gratitude.

Whatever the outcome, please know how much we appreciate you hard work, and Cogumel's too.

The recent events are not a reflection on you or your thread which has been a fantastic and valuable contribution to our learning community and we would miss you sooooooooo much. I feel very upset now to think that you could be leaving us beacuase of the actions of a few people.

You are such a valuable and well esteemed member and You are sooo dearly lloved, Marshall and we would really hate to see you leave us.

We really appreciate all that you have done for us and if you do decide to go would not wish to hold you back but we respect your decision.

If I had the ability and could guarantee to offer the time I would do so now but apart from the commitment of time I have not yet reached a sufficiently high level of skill/expertise in Spanish nor confidence to be able to promise not to make mistakes.

There may still be some here, who have the ability but they would have to offer their services and skills personally. I could not and would not do so their behalf that would be wrong.

I will pray that someone comes forward Marshall to volunteer./offer to correct your thread.

Hello, Dr. Marshall Hendrix.

I am new to this site, but since I visit it every day, I loved your thread very much. I don't know what happened here and who could say anything bad about Heidita or Cogumela or You, (I can't beleive that there could be anything like that), but I wish to say how much we all appreciate everything that You do.

I join to all the good wishes, said before. We all want You to stay, because no one wants to lose this wonderful thread and its wonderful threadowner. Thank you very much. smile I wish to help if I am able.

With respect, Mariam. alt text
