Culpable

guilty, guilty party, accusable, culprit, offender

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted December 6, 2011.

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Normalmente cuando veo una película, después digo “fue un rollo patatero”, y entonces me pregunto quién es el culpable para malgastar dos horas de mi vida.

Usually when I watch a movie, afterwards I say “That was terrible”, and then I wonder who is responsible for wasting two hours of my life.

When a child is guilty of something, they give it away in their eyes.

Cuando un niño es culpable de algo, ceden el paso con sus ojos.

2nd try:
Cuando un niño es culpable de algo, muestran su culpa en sus ojos.

Katy...ceder el paso does not work here. It means to give way (to yield)! - drvicente, Nov 7, 2011

Una buena razón de tener un perro es que siempre asume la culpa de algunos malos olores por la casa, ¡aunque no sea el culpable!

With drvicente's corrections:

Una buena razón de tener un perro es que siempre asume cualquier mal olor por la casa, ¡aunque no sea el culpable!

One good reason for having a dog is that he always gets the blame for any bad smells around the house, even if he is not to blame!

¿Quién es el culpable? Siempre es otra persona .

Who is responsible? It's always someone else.

No one is guilty until the court says so.

Nadie es culpable hasta que el tribunal dice lo diga así.

Para los problemas del matrimonio casi siempre son culpables los dos.

Marital problems are almost always both partners' fault.

La semana pasada olvidé el cumpleaños de mi esposa. No puedo explicar la rabia que tenía. Después de todo ella fue la culpable. No me recordó lo de la fecha.

I forgot my wife's birthday last week. I just couldn't understand the mood she was in. After all, she's the guilty one. She forgot to remind me about the date.

Tengo que decir he sido culpable de escribiendo mensajes privado a los correctores para preguntar por más explicación. ¡Lo siento!

I have to say I have been guilty of sending private messages to the correctors to ask for more explanation. Sorry!
