Lunch in English can be a smaller meal than almuerzo in Spanish and eaten earlier in the afternoon. - 0074b507, Nov 4, 2011
Yes that's true Q thank you for reminding me. However I was more concerned on this occasion with conveying the linguistic significance than dealing with the practical implications . My focus was merely to answer the question asked :) - FELIZ77, Nov 4, 2011

Almuerzo for the most of the Spanish speaking countries is the one at noon, usually taken from noon to 2pm.

In Mexico almuerzo is breakfast, I think...

I've been under the impression that almuerzo is lunch but no I'm not so sure. In Spain, at least, it sounds like there's more to it. Here's what I've dug up:

el desayuno - breakfast

el almuerzo - meal between el desayuno and the main meal (la comida)

la comida - yes it means "food" but also apparently "main meal" of the day (maybe at about 2:00pm??)

la meriendá - snack at about 6:00pm before la cena

la cena - dinner at 9:30pm or 10:00pm

Going by this, the Spanish should be much heavier people.

I've also spent some time in Costa Rica and I know they have breakfast, a mid-morning "heavy" snack, lunch, a mid-afternoon snack, and dinner. I'm not sure whether el almuerzo es the mid-morning thing or the meal closer to noon. Can anybody sort this out? ¿Alguien puede resolver eso?
