Another suggests something in addition to another thing. For example, If I said "I want another piece of pizza", that would mean I want an additional piece of pizza.

Other suggests something instead of or in place of another thing. For example, if I said "I want the other pizza", that would mean I want a different pizza instead of the one I have.

Hope that helps smile

Acabo de comer una galleta. Quiero comer otra (another). No quiero comer éste, pero la otra (other, the other one).

Mira, super simplificado:

other (plural)

another (singular)

ten en cuenta que another se compone de "an + other", es decir UN otro, es decir, solo usado en singular, claro.

Yo sé que los alumnos suelen confundir ese tipo de frases, suelo super simplificarlo.

Me dio otro libro. He gave me another book.

Me dio otros libros. He gave me other books.

Tell me another story. Cuéntame otra historia.

Tell me other stories. cuéntame otras historias.

This is super super simplified, Ladies, don't get your knickers in a twist, jeje, this applies only to students of English and absolute beginners....very elemental.

I think that some of these replies are an over-simplification.

Another ?[uh-nuhth-er]

adjective

  • 1) being one more or more of the same; further; additional: another piece of cake.
  • 2) different; distinct; of a different period, place, or kind: at another time; another man.
  • 3) very similar to; of the same kind or category as: What we need today is another Thomas Jefferson.

pronoun

other in some contexts they are almost synonymous; the differences are much more subtle in some contexts than mentioned in replies.

Furthermore there is the philosophical/psychological distinction "self and other" ;-) - lagartijaverde, Nov 4, 2011

''Other'' refers to something that is distinctly different from the first mentioned person or object.

eg: Could you bring me the other book, please?

The word ''another'' is used to refer to an additional person or object

eg; Could you bring me another chair, please?

I hope this helps grin
