I am getting older...

I am getting older...

Many times, I find myslef saying this, especially when trying to communicate in spanish. Everyone I speak to, who claims to be fluent, has a different way of saying it & it doesn't seem to be dependent on which country they're from. The latest interpretation from a native of Mexico I know is: "me estoy envejeciendo", but this is the "...ing" form of the verb... wouldn't "... envejecido" be more appropriate??

I would say me estoy haciendo viejo myself, but me estoy envejeciendo sounds good. Do you mean why not "me envejezco"? Well, I think this is a good use of present progressive. After all, you are in the process of getting old with every second of everyday but, you are doing it at this very moment.

We do not use viejo here:

Me estoy haciendo mayorgrin

Estoy envejeciendo mucho. I look really old.

Estoy muy viejo. I am really old...would not be used in this case.

Calvo said:

"Me envejezco" is also correct. You could also say "Me voy envejeciendo", "me pongo viejo", "me ando envejeciendo", a

Only the bolded part would be idiomatic.

Me evejezco sounds like you are undergoing some kind of treatment where they make you old. same in me pongo viejo, very weird.

No. If we define the verb "envejecer(se)" as "hacerse viejo (to become old), then we might recognize that the action being described can be thought of as a process. To emphasize the durative or progressive nature of a process, that is, to emphasize the fact that it is an ongoing process, we can use the gerundio form of the verb (enjececiendo), i.e. with the periphrastic expression "estoy envejeciendo."

The past participle of the verb, however, points to the action having been completed. More specifically, the term "envejecido" would imply that the process of "becoming/getting older" has already been completed so that "estoy envejecido" would describe one's state of being once this process had been completed as in "I am grown old/aged" or possibly, "I'm no spring chicken." In any case, I have never personally seen the past participle of envejecer used in this fashion (that is, alongside the verb estar) and would suggest waiting for a native speaker to comment on such usage.

Me estoy envejeciendo –vs– Estoy envejeciendo

The DRAE notes that in regards to the use of the pronominal form of the verb (i.e. the appearance of the pronoun "me," here), it is more common to see it without the pronoun; however, it also admits that the pronominal form is not considered incorrect.

Ok I asked the people at work, granted they are not educated at the college level etc....

but the general consensus was that

Me estoy haciendo más viejo

is how you would say it about yourself

and

Me estoy haciendo mayor / te estás haciendo mayor

is how you would say it about someone else.

Now, they didn't like envejecer for this, and I don't use that word much so I really don't know much about it.

I would say (as I said) Me estoy haciendo viejo, but they told me you should say Me estoy haciendo más viejo and that the mas makes a difference (and I can imagine that) but I don't know if that changes the rudeness factor that Heidita pointed out here.

I think that "soy viejo" VS "estoy viejo" (btw) is I am old VS I feel old, so there's that. Anyway, just thought I would post my findings. wink

It should be noted that none of these people speak any English nor can most of them read or write in any language.

Very interesting jeezzle & thank you for asking & sharing this w/ the people at your work who are native speakers obviously. I'm the "old man" who started this whole thing in the first place & I'm giving you a vote! - t8805jg, Nov 8, 2011

But, what are you doing to get older?. Are you getting older to yourself?.

"Me envejezco" is incorrect. I cannot "envejecerme a mí mismo".

"Me rejuvenezco" is incorrect.

"Me estoy haciendo mayor" is correct.

"Estoy envejeciendo" is correct.

"Estoy rejuveneciendo" is correct.

Pues no, Nila.
- cogumela, Nov 3, 2011
This is not a contest. I think we should teach what is common. The RAE is full of words that are not of common use and they WILL sound odd. - 00e657d4, Nov 3, 2011
- cogumela, Nov 3, 2011

There are a bunch of ways of saying it. "Me estoy envejeciendo" is absolutely correct, but, as Jeezzle says "Me envejezco" is also correct. You could also say "Me voy envejeciendo", "me pongo viejo", "me ando envejeciendo", and probably several other ways that don't come to mind right now. Personally, I would probably use either the first one or the "me pongo viejo". You could even say "me pongo cada vez más viejo."

Precisamente..wink

Ese señor ha muerto hace unos pocos añitos, no vayamos a desenterrar viejas historias...wink

I couldn't agree morewink

Envejecerse, hoy en día, se interepretaría como: I am getting myself a treatment taht makes me look old. Which is of course absurd. It could be used however in films, some actors need to look older so

Le han envejecido. they made him look older.

Ha envejecido mucho. Está envejeciendo.

Me estoy haciendo viejo, is not precisely wrong...but it sounds rude in Spain and we would only use that, when we want to point out some kind of failure due to age.

Me estoy haciendo viejo...no veo nada sin gafas...

Even here though, we would use me estoy haciendo mayor...who wants to be called an old man? jeje

- cogumela, Nov 3, 2011
