"side dish" and "main dish"?

How would you say "side dish" and "main dish"? I think I've heard both "plato fuerte and "plato principal" for main dish. Is one preferable--does it depend on the country? I don't think I've ever heard "side dish." One entry says "entremés" but I've understood that as "hors-d'oeuvres."
