How are years usually called in Spanish?

Question

I guess this could fall under culture.

In English we call the year 2011 as either Two thousand and Eleven, or Twenty-Eleven.

Is there a norm for how the Spanish people call this year, in Spanish of course? Or does it vary with country/region?

I know, its a very beginning-of-the-millenium thing. Very soon we will break up years into 2 parts of 2 digits, like Nineteen-ninety-one (1991) did.

Like, say, I want to book a room for 2/1/2012 I shouldn't say 'Dos de Enero de Veinte-Doce' but should say 'Dos de Enero de Dos mil doce'?

In casual speech, "two thousand and eleven" would be okay, however, for writing (school assignments, whatever) in English, it would be "two thousand eleven" - no and .... - Lector_Constante, Oct 30, 2011

In Spanish it is very straight forward for example it is the year 2011. Estamos en el año de "dos mil once= two thousand and eleven." 1996 is mil novecientos noventa y seis= one thousand nine hundred ninety six. You just use the decimal system. Start with your thousands, then hundreds, the tens and lastly ones.

there is only 1 way to call years in spanish as far as Im aware, and that would just be the actual number, for example, 2011 would be "dos mil once", 1990 would be "mil novescientos noventa", and so on
