Is "el sofá" masculine because it has an accent at the end, or it's just an exception?

It's masculine and it's an exception because it breaks what most people consider is the common rule, ie, ending in "a" for feminine and "o" for masculine.
There are many others,
el mapa, el systema, la mano, etc, etc. You just have to learn the gender when you learn the noun.
