Right, "sonar la flauta" is an idiom.

When you say : “wow, me sonó la flauta”

This means that you did something right unexpectedly.

The expression "sonar la flauta" meaning "get lucky" comes from a fable in which a donkey makes sound a flute sound accidentally. He happens to believe that he can play the flute and goes around showing off.

Sonar la flauta

Estar de cine - ¡Estuviste de cine! "You're great!"

Estuviste de cine = Estuviste genial, bien, perfecto.....

sonar la flauta - to play the flute

tener tablas - to be an old hand at something (like acting)

estar de cine - to be at the movies (Not sure about this one, though. It might be an idiom for something else.)

thanks alot :-) Though, Sonar la flauta should also be more than a literal translation... I thought the same about Estar de cine... but, is it too obvious? Is it a trick!? haha - amyfreelance, Oct 28, 2011
